Remember the first agents you ever saw? exactly how close to reality do you think they were? Did they resemble somebody who would never associate with unless your career depended on it? Generally what we think of when agents come to mind is an essentially unpleasant person whose interest is in their own self preservation more than anything, with the success of their clients being secondary, only inasmuch as it may determine their own success.
Agents have a bad rap. Why is that? How many portrayals of agents have we seen in movies in television that show them as sneaky slime-balls that will sell you out in two seconds for a couple of bucks?
Of course, agents can't possibly have a negative impact on your career unless you let them. The information is out there, there are many actors with a lot of talent who are willing to advise young up and comers on which agents are trustworthy, and which ones will eat you alive.
